The social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now referred to as X, has successfully obtained a regulatory license enabling it to process cryptocurrency payments within the United States.
According to publicly accessible data from the Nationwide Multi-State Licensing System (NMLS), X was granted the Rhode Island Currency Transmitter License on August 28.
This license from Rhode Island authorizes X to engage in lawful activities such as “managing virtual currency” and “facilitating transactions involving virtual currency,” both for its own operations and on behalf of others, as indicated by an official document from the state’s Department of Business Regulation.
Under the ownership of Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and an advocate of Dogecoin, X has also secured money transmitter licenses from various other states in recent weeks. However, the Rhode Island license stands out as the sole license that explicitly encompasses cryptocurrency payments.
